Officials said the crash happened along Old Orange Mill Road about a mile away from the high school which is located at 1550 Owens Store Road. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies said the accident involved only one vehicle which appeared to have left the roadway in a curvy area and struck a tree.

"It appears the car came around the corner at a high rate of speed," said Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Director Jay Baker.

Deputies say the 17-year-old front seat passenger was killed in the crash.  He has been identified as Stephen Smith, a senior at Creekview High School.  Two other 17-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy were rushed to the hospital.
